See what we’ve been up to for each of the eight days of Hanukkah!
Day 1: Backcountry Hanukiya Students constructed their own hanukiyah to light Hanukkah candles in the field for the eight nights of Hanukkah.
Day 2: Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel Staff and students took on the challenge of carving their own dreidels. They came out great!
Day 3: The Spirit of Hanukkah (and Seltzer!) Our staff back at basecamp worked on a little something of their own: a Hanukiya made entirely of empty La Croix seltzer cans. The top row of cans were filled with lantern oil and wicks were added each night for candle lighting.
Day 4: Courage in the Face of Challenge Students are challenged each week during backcountry excursions, and this week embarked on a new route. The group discussed what it means to have resilience and persevere despite limiting factors, similar to what it would have been like as Jews to light the candles of Hanukkah in the face of oppression.
Day 5: Sufganiyot Out in the field, the group made delicious sufganiyot, jelly-filled donuts!
Day 6: Shabbat As usual, students cooked a festive Shabbat meal over the fire, this week with a Hanukkah twist!
Day 7: Games & Songs The group brought Shabbat to a close by singing joyful Hanukkah songs and playing Hanukkah-themed games. What a wonderful way to end a challenging and fulfilling week.
Day 8: Finding Light in the Darkness Students discussed what Hanukkah says about finding resilience and strength in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles
